Over the last five years, I have done a lot of thinking about space. I don’t mean aliens and rockets. I mean the space in which we live our lives – public space, private space, the spaces in between heaven and earth. Space matters to us. A LOT. We have deep expectations for what ought to happen in particular spaces. Some of them seem sacred to us. We would prefer some of them to be spaces of solitude. Others seem strange when they are empty. When our expectations for those spaces are violated, things can get awfully messy.

While completing a master’s degree in rhetoric, I became familiar with many of the theoretical questions that govern debates about space. As an advocate for people experiencing homelessness, I regularly see how our spatial norms influence the ways we treat other people. And as a person seeking truth, compassion, and justice, I find myself excited by the idea that the earth might actually be a space for enacting the kingdom of God right now.

This blog may not always be about space in its traditional sense, but I think it will always be about our quest to figure out how best to live in the spaces we have been given. I invite you to join me on that journey.
